I’ve always been REAL interested in making hip hop beats…. i’m a huge fan of hip hop and i think it would be awesome to be a producer. I was wondering if there are colleges (specifically in the Cleveland, Ohio area) that offer courses on music production? What would be my best bet on getting into the hip hop production career? Taking classes or just buying equipment and reading books or what not? Thanks!

Sampling


Sampling is an integral part of hip-hop bit production. Samples are taken from the records and imported into the sequencers or samplers. Producers generally opt for creating totally original recordings using the computer-generated beats. Re-record or overdub the sampled part with the live musician is another solution.


Beats


The drum beat is another important element of hip-hop beat production. It is very essential to understand the beats to know the hip-hop construction. Beats include the following-

• MIDI Drum patterns or audio drum loops which include the complete drum tracks

• A Bassline (MIDI sequence)

• Dubs and snips (samples that accent and give character)

• Supporting orchestration (could be synch pads, horns, string sections)


The beat can be short or long and it is 8 bars in its shortest form. If long, it may consist of different parts for the chorus and verse and may add introduction, break and ending.


The vocal tracks in the hip-hop song consist of


• Main vocal-main vocalist performs the rap

• Second vocal- a guest vocal or second vocal that takes a verse

Recording


For hip-hop beat production, a multi-track recorder is typically used for recording. Nowadays, digital ADAT tape recorders have become popular. Use of a PC as a multi-track recorder with or without outboard can be good alternative. Professional producers generally prefer the condenser microphone for studio recording because of their high quality and wide-range response. The dynamic microphone is a primary alternative to expensive condenser microphone.


Samplers


Hardware samplers have been involved in hip-hop beat production. Samplers outfitted with pads such as MV8000 and MPC can be conveniently used. Software samplers such as Kontakt 2, Halion, Gigastudio, Battery are quite good and can provide more flexibility if your computer is capable to run inside a sequencer. A control pad surface like the Akai MPD16 can be used to provide some hardware control over your software.


Synthesizers


Synthesizers are frequently used for hip-hop beat production. They are used for basslines, melody, for sound synthesis and as percussive stabs. Hip-hop is a genre of music that comprises of a fusion of several styles mostly rap accompanied by backing beats. Hip-hop is termed as a culture especially among the African Americans and it started back in the 70s in New York. Track sampling is the act of taking a portion of a sound recording and using it as a different sound in recording of another song. Most of the current hip-hop releases have part of their beats or lyrics borrowed from some of the old-school music. Adding a whole different dimension to making beats.

Despite the fact that hip-hop is a relatively newer genre of music, (in comparison with the others), its one of the most dynamic. The main reason why hip-hop sampling is widespread is the notion that it brings old back to life. Most beats and lyrics used in the old-school songs are simply genius and thus making them sound new-school and hip makes the younger generation identify more with the music.

There are various ways in which hip-hop tracks can be sampled. When making beats the one commonly used by producers is loops. This is a fusion of short samples of beats from previously done tracks. Thus a non-keen listener may not clearly hear the beats as the fusion sounds are completely different from the individual beats. This was the original idea behind sampling because it enhances the creativity of producers as the end product is a completely new innovation.

Another form of hip-hop track sampling in the process of making beats is using samples of musical instruments. The instruments act as basis of new sounds and can be played back at different pitches. However, most of these samples are created from recording studios using instrumentals that have been played by world’s best instrumentalists .

Use of unconventional (non-musical) sounds is also a form of sampling in hip-hop. Most sounds used include gunshots, sirens, locomotive whistles and natural sounds. These sounds create a sound effect that may be difficult to portray using musical instruments in making beats.

However, legal issues have arisen over the violation of intellectual property rights by the hip-hop artists who do sampled tracks. But there is fundamental law that governs how the art of sampling should be done and the extent to which borrowed lyrics can be incorporated in a track. Usually prior authorization has to be obtained before sampling a track. Producers have mainly been blamed for abusing the art of sampling especially when they simply lay new drums over loops that have been previously used, mix, then release as a brand new track.

Some of the famous hip-hop producers who use sampled tracks include Kanye West although his musical integrity has sometimes been questioned due to his continued use of old-school beats and lyrics. However, this is not necessary true seeing the success stories from the tracks he produces.

Instances of hip-hop artists and producers being sued for violation of music copyrights started rising from the year 2000. The recent one was between the Cash Money Records and artist Juvenile who were sued by a local performer DJ Jubilee for using one of his lines in their track.

Back in the early 1970s, old school DJs began using several breaks (part of a funk or jazz song where the music “breaks” and only rhythm section plays) that created something fun to dace to. DJs would mix it up with turntables; switching from break to break, creating an ongoing loop known as a breakbeat.

Kurtis Blow was one of the first artists to use a digital sampler to make a record. Samplers and sequencers really let samples and drum beats to creatively mixed together stretching the sound capabilities of vinyl alone….this my friends  gave birth to real hip hop production.

The Roland TR-808 aka the 808 was introduced in 1980, one of the earliest forms of advance music production technology…..it paved the way. The E-mu SP-12 then came out in 1985 which allowed 2.5 seconds of recording time. In early hip hop the recording time on these devices were primarily used to sample drum loops. Followed by the SP-1200, the Akai MPC60 came out in 1988, capable of 12 seconds of sampling time….the first MPC to hit the market.

Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad revolutionized the design and structure of hip hop beats by combining multiple samples per song and layering some breaks with a drum machine. Thanks to the group who brought us the classic Fight The Power, hip hop beats were taken to a new creative height opening up the ideas of using multiple beat samples and going beyond a repetitive loop. This new sound in modern day hip hop allowed a track to contain a sound sequence for the verse and another sequence for the hook….a new day for Hip Hop Production.

Updated versions of the MPC were released in the Mid-90′s and continued to improve itself every other year with more advanced features and flexibility. MPCs combined a drum machine, longer sample sizes and an onboard sequencer. Sean Combs aka Puff Daddy and his production team pushed the envelope with a new style where entire sections of records were sampled, oppose to only short snippets. Another major step forward in production, this gave birth to turning old school classics into new school hits. With the evolution of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), software programmers were now able to write applications that could record and play back the notes played by a musician. Yet another massive step in the evolution of hip hop production and music technology in general.

Today technology has come so far that the need for most heavy and expensive equipment been replaced by computer software. A program now allowed vocals to be recorded, edited, mixed and mastered while beats are able to be made from scratch. Anyone can produce records these days and with advancements in social media and video sharing websites like YouTube, you can go from your Momma’s basement to a million dollar studio making beats with the best in the business.
